SVP Christmas Party
Members of the Good Shepherd SVP arrange an annual event in the run up to Christmas when the people they visit during the year are invited to a festive lunch at the Parish Social Centre. Any of the guests who are unable to travel independently are transported to and from the venue. Steps are also taken to establish whether any of the guests have special dietary needs which can be catered for.

The SVP liaise with Christ the King Secondary School which provides members of the sixth form who voluntarily give their time to wait on at the event. The meal consists of 4 courses: a starter of melon garnished with orange, main course of roast turkey, stuffing, roast potatoes, pigs in blankets, peas, carrots, sprouts, beans, gravy and cranberry sauce. This is followed by either Christmas pudding and custard or trifle. The final course is mince pie and coffee or tea. Soft drinks or wine is served during the meal.Guests are accompanied by 2 SVP members at each table. Guests have the opportunity to mingle and renew old acquaintances as well as making new friends both before and after the meal. The meal is prepared and cooked on the premises by members of the SVP together with experienced helpers. The hall is prepared in advance of the meal and the tables are laid out with great care to create a very welcoming environment.

The guests, numbering 30, are formally welcomed and Canon Philipp says Grace before the meal. When the meal is finished and the tables cleared there is a special appearance by Father Christmas, arriving on an environmentally scooter, who distributes presents and Christmas cards to every guest. There is then the opportunity for guests to express their appreciation to the kitchen staff and the students for all their efforts. The afternoon is then rounded by a short communal Carol Service before guests are then transported back to their homes.
